Biography

Bill Nixon grew up in Spartanburg and graduated from Spartanburg High School where he was a three-year varsity wrestler and Boy’s State representative. He attended The Citadel on a full academic scholarship and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1993. He is a member of the 1993 Junior Sword Drill. He received his Juris Doctorate from Campbell University School of Law in 1996 and studied as a visiting student at the University of South Carolina School of Law. During the summer of 1990, he lived and worked in Israel excavating archeological sites, including Tel Jezreel. Upon graduation, Mr. Nixon served a one-year clerkship for The Honorable Edward B. Cottingham of the Fourth Judicial Circuit of South Carolina. Upon completion of his time with Judge Cottingham, he began prosecuting as an Assistant Solicitor for the Ninth Judicial Circuit, which is comprised of both Charleston and Berkeley Counties. While a prosecutor, Mr. Nixon was assigned his first murder case at 26 years old after only eight months on the job and went on to successfully prosecute through to jury trial verdicts numerous high profile violent crime cases over his nearly four years of service. The cases he handled included over a dozen complex murder cases, several with multiple defendants, as well as drug possession, drug trafficking, burglary, armed robbery, criminal sexual conduct (rape), larceny, and DUI cases.

In January 2001, Mr. Nixon moved to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and began working in private practice with Tom Bolt and Associates, P.C. He was involved in the development of Lovango Cay and the early stages of Botany Bay on St. Thomas. While in St. Thomas, Mr. Nixon served as President of the Young Lawyers Division of the Virgin Islands Bar Association. He maintains his law license in the U.S. Virgin Islands and occasionally associates on cases there.

In the fall of 2002, Mr. Nixon was accepted into The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in London, United Kingdom, where he studied international criminal law and United Nations Law. In 2003 he was awarded a Masters of Arts degree in the History of International Relations from LSE.

Mr. Nixon returned to the United States in 2004 and began working for McAngus, Goudelock and Courie, a regional insurance defense firm. During his time as an associate with McAngus, Mr. Nixon handled hundreds of workers’ compensation cases, including numerous trials and appeals. He also handled numerous personal injury matters, polishing his trial skills and learning the insurance defense business from the inside out.

In 2006, Mr. Nixon founded his private practice and has been serving the legal needs of people throughout South Carolina ever since. He resides in West Ashley with his wife, where they spend many nights and weekends on various sports fields watching and coaching their four children. He is actively involved in John Wesley United Methodist Church where he has served as Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Orange Grove Charter School where he has served numerous years on the Board including two years as president of the charter school board.
